Building a new school is one of the most complex challenges a school district faces. The goal is to create an environment where students can thrive for the next twenty-plus years. Recently, MityBilt partnered with Conseil scolaire FrancoSud on their ambitious new project in Calgary: the Complexe scolaire francophone de Silverado.
This project was about more than just filling rooms with tables and chairs; it was about creating a space that honors the district's philosophy while ensuring students feel welcome, safe, and inspired.
Watch the video below to see how this vision came to life.
The educational philosophy at FrancoSud is centered on "dreaming, blooming, and always getting better." But translating abstract concepts like these into the physical logistics of a building requires a specific kind of partnership.
For École Silverado, the challenge was to balance the practical necessities—durability, flow, and ergonomics—without losing sight of the human element. The furniture had to support the model of teaching while ensuring that the environment remained student-centric.
One of the standout features of the new school is the library, a space filled with natural light designed to be the heart of the school. In a powerful nod to the spirit of reconciliation, the furniture in this space was chosen to reproduce the colors of the Medicine Wheel.
This design choice serves a dual purpose: it honors Indigenous ways of knowing, and it creates a "comfortable and safe space" for all students. It signals that the library is a place of inclusion and community, not just a repository for books.
As highlighted in the project video, MityBilt’s role goes beyond providing "a desk with a chair for a student to learn." The ultimate goal is to foster an environment where students genuinely want to come to school.
When we can help create learning spaces that stay within budget, stand up to the rigors of everyday use, and make students excited to be there, we consider the project a success. We are proud to have supported FrancoSud in bringing École Silverado to life, creating a space where students can dream, bloom, and grow for decades to come.
